The Importance of Inclusive Employment

Inclusivity is of utmost importance in the workplace. Because everyone has the right to feel comfortable, included, and respected in their place of work.

Inclusive employment cultivates a workplace environment where everyone is welcomed and valued, no matter their background, ethnicity, health, or any other circumstances. However, when inclusive employment comes to mind, many think of race, ethnicity, gender, or religious inclusion—not individuals with disabilities. A study from Harvard Business Review even mentions that 88% of employees with invisible disabilities try to avoid discrimination and stigma by not disclosing that they have a disability. This statistic proves just how important it is for employers to be inclusive and adaptable to all individuals.

Maintaining inclusivity allows all employees, specifically those with disabilities, to have equal opportunities, advocate for themselves, and develop in their career. From overall company morale to employee’s job satisfaction and motivation, inclusive employment is greatly important for the success of a workplace.

Opportunity for All

Inclusive employment creates equal opportunities for all. It fosters a workplace where every individual has the chance to thrive. For individuals with disabilities, inclusive employment provides opportunities for growth, socialization, and real-world experience. This can involve workplaces making physical and online spaces accessible while also adjusting to individuals’ needs. Modifying job positions to align with individual strengths, needs, and capabilities allows employees to feel empowered in their roles and perform to their fullest potential.

Dispelling the Stigma

Individuals with disabilities can be hesitant to inform employers about their disabilities. Despite anti-discrimination workplace laws, stigmas around disabilities are still in existence in the workplace. As an employer and individual, there are steps to take to dispel these stigmas to enhance workplace inclusivity.

  1. Revisit company policies and values – Reviewing and adjusting your company’s fundamentals, such as policies and values, allow you to stay up to date with resourceful information, company culture, and inclusive practices. Communicating these fundamentals to employees is essential to adapt to change and diminish any stigmas that can form over time.
  2. Make accommodations accessible – Keeping accessibility in mind when providing resources and accommodations for those with disabilities makes it easier to get help when it’s needed. When tools are easier to access, individuals with disabilities are much more likely to be proactive with using them.
  3. Promote positivity and encouragement – Verbal communication and encouragement can go a long way. Be mindful of conversations in the workplace to ensure they’re beneficial and inclusive as this allows everyone to feel comfortable and welcomed in their work environment.

When given the resources and tools for success, all employees are more likely to work cohesively within the company—strengthening the overall culture and achievement! This is particularly important for individuals with disabilities, as fostering an environment where they can find their voice and self-advocate empowers them to contribute their unique perspectives and skills.

Community Advocacy

Being a company that operates under the importance of inclusive employment creates room for advocacy to certain communities, such as individuals with disabilities. This advocacy extends beyond the workplace as it sets a precedent for other operations to follow. Being a leader in your sector for inclusive employment also empowers potential employees and candidates to take action in their career.

Additionally, seeing how a workplace is willing to adapt to an individual’s needs makes them more admirable as an employer. When companies incorporate inclusive hiring practices, they contribute to a broader community where people with disabilities can be recognized for their skills, talents, and potential.
