Adult Family Homes

Covey’s Community Living for Adults with Disabilities

Moving out of a parent or guardian’s house is a huge milestone. While individuals with disabilities face many obstacles in the process, Covey is here to help our participants achieve this goal with more comfort and ease. Because, we understand the profound importance of creating an environment where our participants can thrive, grow, and experience independence.

Covey is proud to have our very own Adult Family Homes—accessible houses that give adults with disabilities the opportunity to live amongst peers, while also receiving care and support as needed. Our goal is for residents to find solace, comfort, and a true sense of belonging in their new home—somewhere they can spread their wings and embrace life to the fullest!

Our Homes

Benefits of Adult Family Homes

For Residents:

Covey’s Adult Family Homes are designed to provide a safe and stable living environment that creates opportunities that foster personal growth. In addition to enhancing independence, confidence, and daily skills, AFH residents have the pleasure of living alongside their peers! The adults living together have a built-in group of friends-turned-family who may share similar strengths, challenges, and interests.

For Family:

Families learn how to “let go” of their loved one and support their independence. Once a family member is no longer a full-time caregiver, they have an opportunity to recharge and pursue new experiences with peace of mind that their loved one is in great care. They can also relate to their loved one on a person to person level, not as a caregiver. This allows them to simply enjoy the time spent together, rather than using the time to accomplish a care need.

For the Community:

Adult Family Homes allow the surrounding community to foster an appreciation for differences. While AFHs appear similar to any other house in the neighborhood, they are fitted with reasonable accommodations that may include wheelchair-accessible entrances, wider doorways, raised electrical outlets, and lower kitchen surfaces. AFHs help the community around them cultivate a more inclusive mindset and better understand the talents and gifts adults with disabilities have to offer. Plus, we make great neighbors!

Covey’s Adult Family Homes

Covey owns and operates three 4-bedroom Adult Family Homes in the Fox Valley. Funded by the Neighborhood Investment Grant, all homes are licensed by the State of Wisconsin, meeting and exceeding care standards. All of our AFHs include:

  • Around-the-clock caregiving
  • Transportation coordination
  • Individualized support
  • Skill-building (cooking, self care, budgeting, and more)
  • Planned activities and social engagement
  • Resident menu input
  • Freedom of home furnishing and decor

Each of our Adult Family Homes is named after a bird species. These names are more than symbolic—they reflect the spirit and intention of the home itself.

Birds represent so much of what we stand for: A “covey” is a small flock of birds—close-knit, cooperative, and protective. It’s a beautiful metaphor for the sense of belonging and mutual support we cultivate in every one of our homes.

Just as each bird species has its own individual traits and rhythms, every person we support is wonderfully unique. We honor that individuality in everything we do!
