5 Healthy Habits for Family Caregivers

Being a caregiver for a family member is no easy task. It requires a great deal of patience, understanding, and flexibility. However, improving the quality of life of your loved ones can be one of the most rewarding aspects of this role. It’s important to not only take care of your loved ones, but also take care of yourself. From a change of scenery to socialization and self care, there are five healthy habits for family caregivers to implement into their daily lives.

Self Care

Making time for yourself aside from caring for a family member is essential for maintaining your personal well-being! Intentionally setting aside time for yourself throughout the week is a great way to implement a routine for personal wellness. Some ideas for self care include:

  • Participating in an exercise class
  • Going on a nature walk
  • Cooking a favorite dish
  • Journaling or reading
  • Meditation or yoga
  • Having an at-home spa day
  • Getting a massage

Whichever method you choose, take time for activities that allow you to recharge.

Switch up the Environment

As family caregivers typically provide care in their household or their family members’ household, a change of scenery and environment can help refresh and reset your mind. Some outdoor environments may be a local park, a nature trail, a beach, or lakefront. A few indoor environment changes could be at another family member or friend’s house, a restaurant, or an indoor space for physical activity. Aside from getting a change of scenery, a change in environment can also lead to socialization and the formation of new relationships from those in similar situations.

Socialize and Connect

A great way to connect with other family caregivers is through social media. Facebook groups allow users to connect and share their experiences, creating an online community. From searching up your city or neighborhood’s group to even specifically searching for caregiver groups, there is a variety of virtual communities to let caregivers express their thoughts, concerns, and accomplishments. These groups can extend beyond being a virtual collaboration, as local groups may organize community events or share relevant happenings. Forming friendships through these groups to extend your support system is also a great benefit of outreaching.

Education

To learn more about the ways to take the best care of your family member, continuing your education on important topics can be a great first step. Education for caregivers can come from a few different sources:

  • Online classes
  • Podcasts
  • Books, blogs, or articles
  • Informational sessions
  • Advice and experience from those in a similar position
Celebrate Your Accomplishments

It’s no surprise that being a caregiver comes with challenges and hardships, however it also comes with rewarding feelings of joy knowing you are contributing positively to your family member. Finding the small accomplishments between you and the person you’re caring for allows you to recognize the efforts you’re putting in. Recognizing these successes also creates motivation and opportunity for continued care. Reflect on the progress you’ve made or contributed to, and celebrate it!
